Portrait Session: Q & A

So you've decided to book a portrait session!

Now what?

Below are answers to some commonly-asked questions about portrait sessions. Of course, the answers are simply suggestions - please do whatever makes you most comfortable!

Q: What should we wear?

A: I recommend that you wear solid colors or very subtle patterns that coordinate with the rest of your family. For example, if Husband wears a yellow shirt and khacki pants, Wife could wear a navy shirt with khacki skirt, and Child can wear a light blue dress. Why not prints, you ask? Loud prints and patterns compete with YOU for the attention in the photo. Which do you want to remember more: your adorable 2-year-old or the trucks and cars on his shirt (which, honestly, will probably be out of style in 10 years)?

(Here, Baby wears a subtle pattern while Dad wears solid. Good choice!)

And ladies, cute shoes are always a plus! We can get some pretty detail shots that way. (Did you need an excuse to buy more cute shoes?)

Q: What should we bring?

A: Anything that makes you and your children comfortable and happy! Favorite snacks, toys, blankets/loveys, pacifiers - anything at all. They may make it in some photos (and be cute!) or they may not, but the main reason to bring them is that if your child is happy, you will get wonderful pictures!

Also, you may want to bring a sentimental object. If you have an engagement session, your mother's pearls may look beautiful in a shot with the ring, or the seashell you found at the beach where he proposed could be a good prop.

Q: What if it's cloudy/rainy?

A: Clouds are actually good in the world of photography! We can get some very nice photos on a cloudy day. As for rain: it depends on the amount. If it is pouring and we have scheduled an outdoor session, we can either reschedule or change to an indoor location.

Do you have other questions that I haven't answered? Let me know and I can do another Q & A!
